Fiji’s tourism sector is set to experience a significant boost with the launch of turnaround cruises in partnership with Fiji Airways, according to Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation. This initiative is expected to inject considerable revenue into the Fijian economy while opening new avenues for local tourism businesses.

During a recent address to Parliament, Gavoka explained that each cruise ship is anticipated to generate an average of $305,000 (approximately $147,000 USD) in spending during its port of call, translating to $90 (about $44 USD) per passenger. The innovative “flying cruise” concept allows tourists to fly directly into Fiji, where they can embark on and conclude their cruises, attracting an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 new visitors at a time.

This initiative is aligned with Fiji’s ongoing efforts to enhance the cruise tourism sector, which saw a steady recovery recently. In 2024, Fiji welcomed approximately 86,151 cruise visitors, contributing significantly to the local economy. The arrival of these turnaround cruises is expected to support further growth in tourism, as existing cruise companies will have the chance to engage more local businesses for approved shore excursions, tours, and other visitor experiences.

The introduction of turnaround cruises is expected to coincide with the anticipated increase in cruise visits from 133 in 2024 to around 164 in 2025, coinciding with Fiji’s commitment to diversify its tourism offerings. Minister Gavoka emphasized that the rising number of passengers participating in pre-approved shore excursions signifies a positive trend in visitor engagement, ultimately benefitting both the economy and local culture.

As Fiji works to solidify its reputation as a premier travel destination, the outlook for its cruise tourism sector looks bright, fostering both economic resilience and cultural exchange between visitors and residents. The ongoing recovery and robust planning signal a hopeful future for the tourism industry in this paradise destination.
