Fiji’s Cabinet has officially endorsed the nation’s inaugural National Action Plan aimed at enhancing women’s economic empowerment from 2025 to 2030. This comprehensive plan seeks to bridge the gender gap by expanding women’s access to employment, business support, finance, and vital health services.
The initiative is centered on four key focus areas: equitable employment and training, support for women-led enterprises, enhanced access to funding, and improved health and well-being. The government has emphasized that these measures are a direct response to empower women and facilitate their greater participation in the economic landscape.
The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection is tasked with overseeing the integration and execution of these actions across various sectors. This aligns with previous remarks by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran, who highlighted women’s essential contributions to Fiji’s economy, stressing that their participation is paramount for national progression and economic development.
Underlining the significance of gender equality, Kiran has previously stated that empowering women not only represents a moral obligation but is also fundamentally beneficial for economic growth. The government’s commitment is reinforced by policies that integrate gender considerations into national budgets and plans, as indicated in the Fiji Country Gender Assessment 2023. Despite notable advancements such as a rise in women’s leadership roles and increased visibility in the workforce, challenges like the underrepresentation of women in boardrooms, where they hold only 21% of positions, persist.
This ambitious National Action Plan marks a hopeful advancement toward creating a more inclusive economic environment, with the potential to significantly benefit families and communities throughout Fiji.
