The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has formalized a Terms of Reference (ToR) agreement with various stakeholders aimed at creating a unified front against disinformation in electoral processes. Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, highlighted that this collaborative effort will equip voters with accurate information and promote transparency throughout the electoral cycle.
Mataiciwa expressed the importance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration emphasizes a unified commitment to promoting accountability and trust within Fiji’s electoral framework.” The initiative seeks to gather participants from the media, civil society, and government to formulate a solid response to disinformation, thereby enhancing public confidence in Fiji’s democratic systems.
The ToR, signed on Friday, includes representatives from the Fiji Media Association, Fiji Media Council, FemLink Pacific, the Pacific Centre for Peacebuilding, the Online Safety Commission, and the Electoral Commission of Fiji. The focus of this partnership spans four critical areas: engaging civil society organizations, ensuring effective communication of information, coordinating capacity development, and raising awareness around online safety and disinformation.
This significant signing occurs in the context of Fiji preparing for its upcoming elections in 2026, marking a proactive step towards safeguarding the electoral integrity and fostering a truthful and transparent political environment.
In a world increasingly plagued by disinformation, this initiative offers hope for a well-informed electorate. By prioritizing accountability and collaboration among diverse stakeholders, Fiji is setting a commendable example for other nations on how to defend democratic processes.
