Fiji continues to be a significant transit and distribution center for drugs, leading to a collaborative effort by the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, which are implementing joint operations through an enhanced strategy. This information was confirmed by the Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua, during a recent meeting with Reverend Mosese Cakau of the Assemblies of God Church.
Minister Naivalurua expressed gratitude to the church for its initiatives within the community and highlighted the necessity for stronger partnerships to combat the escalating drug crisis. The DUAVATA framework remains central to these efforts, fostering collaboration among the vanua (communities), lotu (churches), and the Government. This initiative is supported by awareness programs aimed at schools and local communities.
Naivalurua has called on families and churches to take proactive steps in prevention and early intervention, especially targeting youth aged 18 to 30, who are the most affected demographic. He emphasized that tackling the drug crisis demands a dual approach that combines robust law enforcement and active community participation. The Government is committed to a planned and sustainable strategy, fostering hope for a healthier future as they address this pressing issue.
