The Fiji Police Force is amplifying its partnership with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service in response to escalating concerns about drug trafficking across the nation’s borders. Assistant Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga emphasized that both agencies are confronting increasingly sophisticated challenges posed by transnational crime. This strengthened collaboration signifies a collective effort aimed at safeguarding Fiji’s borders, ports, and communities.

The importance of this renewed partnership was underscored during the celebrations for Customs’ International Day, where the Fiji Police Force pledged its steadfast support under the theme of vigilance through commitment. Lutunauga pointed out that Fiji’s geographical landscape presents unique obstacles to border security, making cooperation with Customs vital in curbing the influx of drugs destined for Australia and New Zealand.

He remarked, “We have our ports, we have our airports, and then we have the biggest challenge, which is our porous borders. But having seen the system that has been launched today, this is one of the tools we will be using to help protect and put a barricade around our 300 or so islands of Fiji.”

Furthermore, a cornerstone of Fiji’s border security initiative is the Fiji Police Detector Dog Unit, which relies on sniffer dogs, supported by development partners, to locate drugs at various entry points, including airports and seaports.

FRCS Chair Malakai Nayaga reiterated that effective border management depends on close collaboration with various stakeholders, including government bodies, industry players, regional neighbors, and international partners. He stated, “These partnerships are not optional. They are essential in a world where risks are shared and solutions must be collective. I would like to acknowledge and thank the leaders of our partner agencies here today, both local and international, for your continued commitment and unwavering support to our joint cause.”

The Fiji Police also highlighted that newly implemented systems and enhanced coordination with Customs are imperative in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking, signaling a robust, continuous commitment to protect Fiji’s borders, communities, and regional security. This collaborative effort not only aims to secure Fiji but also hopes to enhance stability across the Pacific region, fostering a safer environment for all.
