The upcoming U20 competition is poised to energize the second leg of the Agromarketing Grassroots Fiji 7s in Bua next month, following the impressive turnout at the recent series at HFC Bank Stadium. Organizers have confirmed that 24 U20 teams will be participating in Bua, surpassing the attendance of both men’s and women’s teams, which consist of 14 and 10 teams respectively.

This increased focus on youth development comes as a direct response to the overwhelming interest displayed during the first leg of the tournament in Suva, where an unexpected 20 U20 teams competed, far exceeding the initial goal of 12. Fiji Sports Council CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure noted that although the tournament typically includes a mix of 16 local teams from Bua and surrounding areas along with eight from other regions, the enthusiasm for youth participation has led to an expanded U20 roster.

“The Bua leg will include more U20 teams than men’s teams due to this interest,” Vakalalabure stated. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at fortifying pathways for young athletes, ensuring they have access to competitive environments that meet national standards both on and off the field.

In addition to rugby sevens, the Bua event will incorporate volleyball, which is expected to garner robust community support, enhancing the overall appeal of the festival. With its blend of youth rugby, senior men’s and women’s competitions, and volleyball, the Bua leg promises to become a dynamic multi-sport festival, continuing the series’ commitment to nurturing grassroots sports throughout Fiji.

This holistic approach not only fosters athletic talent but also strengthens community engagement, paving the way for the next generation of sports enthusiasts in the region.
