The SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 rugby team is preparing with enthusiasm for the Oceania U20 Rugby Championship, with key player Adam Khan highlighting the meaningful experience of representing his home country. Khan, who is originally from Savusavu but grew up in Queensland, Australia, shifted from rugby league to rugby union last year, and is now a pivotal halfback for the team.
He expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to return to Fiji and unite with his teammates, emphasizing the importance of team bonding between the 11 overseas players and their local counterparts. “I feel very grateful representing my home country, happy to be back,” Khan shared, acknowledging the positive relationships forming within the squad. “The local boys are really welcoming for us and treating us very nicely.”
With previous competition experience from the Super Rugby Pacific U20 tournament, Khan noted the tough competition they faced, particularly from New Zealand players, which enriched their skills. He remains optimistic about their upcoming challenges, as the Fiji U20 squad is set to defend their championship title starting with a match against Tonga at King Charles Park in Nadi.
Team manager Nemani Tuifagalele has expressed confidence in the squad’s fitness and readiness, attributing part of their development to the integration of talented overseas players. The combination of local and international talent is expected to bolster the team’s dynamics, enhancing their prospects for success in the tournament that also includes matches against Samoa and Canada.
The tournament is seen not only as an opportunity for immediate success but as a vital step in the long-term growth of rugby in Fiji. Young athletes like Khan embody the potential for the future, reflecting a commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a strong rugby culture. With rigorous training and a positive atmosphere in camp, hopes are high for the Fijian squad as they prepare to make their mark on the international stage.
