The Fiji National Rugby League Under-18 team took on a new challenge this weekend by participating in the Flame Tree Waimanu 7s, a move aimed at keeping their players match-fit following the conclusion of the rugby league season. This transition to the rugby sevens format provided valuable learning experiences for the squad, even though their journey ended in the pool stages.
Captain Iliesa Ravusese noted that adjusting to the different demands of sevens rugby will take time. He emphasized the importance of this experience, as the team engages in discussions about competing in more tournaments, specifically for the Junior Bati 7s.
Ravusese explained that the initial switch posed challenges, stating, “Switching codes from league to 7s is not easy. We copped a few yellow cards in the first half of our first match, and it was because of the tackling style from league that we used in 7s.” He acknowledged that rugby sevens has its own unique rules and style of play that the team needed to adapt to.
The captain expressed gratitude for the opportunity to explore a different sport, highlighting the significance of such experiences for player development. “I believe the more game time we have, the more prepared the boys will be during this off-season before a new year of rugby league starts,” Ravusese shared. He also extended thanks to Madam Kelera Tagivakatini for supporting their involvement in this varied athletic endeavor.
The Junior Bati squad comprised some of the youngest players in the Under-20 grade at the two-day tournament, which wrapped up at Laucala Bay in Suva. Additionally, Ravusese has received an invitation from Sailosi Naiteqe Senior to join the Shogun Highlanders Under-20 team for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, scheduled from the 15th to the 17th of next month at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
This experience not only helps in keeping the players active during the off-season but also broadens their skills and understanding of different football codes, potentially setting them up for greater success in their rugby league journeys ahead.
