Leprosy, a disease that once posed a significant health challenge in Fiji, is now primarily overshadowed by the stigma attached to it. During an event held at the Tamavua Twomey Hospital to mark World Leprosy Day 2026, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa emphasized that while leprosy can be treated, prevented, and cured, the social rejection faced by patients and their families continues to be a major hurdle.

Mr. Ravunawa highlighted the physical and emotional toll the disease takes, stating, “Leprosy is not something that happens only internally — it exposes externally as well.” He pointed out that visible signs of leprosy, such as amputated limbs, often lead to fear and misunderstanding within the community, despite significant advances in treatment.

The minister noted that those affected by leprosy include young students and elderly individuals, many of whom live in isolation. He stressed the importance of compassion and understanding from the public, stating, “The stigma is a big fight for these people; it is important that members of the public show respect and dignity and have love and compassion for patients with leprosy.”

Currently, Fiji records between four to eight indigenous cases of leprosy annually and has also emerged as a regional referral hub for neighboring Pacific Island countries, managing an additional five to seven cases each year. The Tamavua Twomey Hospital and the Pacific Dermatology Training Centre play a vital role in providing support not only locally but for the wider Pacific region.

Mr. Ravunawa concluded by reiterating that the focus should shift from the bacteria that causes leprosy to the stigma, reinforcing that the true enemy lies in the perceptions and attitudes of society. This call for understanding and compassion aims to create a more inclusive community for those affected by this misunderstood disease, paving the way for a more supportive environment.
