Errol Fifer is celebrating a milestone as he turns 100 years old during this festive season. Born on December 28, 1925, Mr. Fifer has witnessed a century of extraordinary transformation, from the era of silent films to the digital age. His life has been marked by significant achievements, starting with his success as one of Australia’s top amateur golfers during the 1940s and 1950s, a passion he maintained until his early 90s.

After pursuing a career in accounting, Mr. Fifer was introduced to the hospitality industry through his clients in Sydney’s vibrant Eastern Suburbs. His journey took a pivotal turn in January 1970 when he arrived in Fiji, where he fell in love with the Mamanuca Islands. By mid-1970, he secured a lease to develop what would become the Mana Island Resort, alongside clients that included family members of notable Australians.

In 1973, Japanese investors came on board as major shareholders, and by 1980, Mr. Fifer had moved to Fiji permanently and developed the Malolo Island Resort. Although he initially planned to retire in 1992, the allure of the hospitality industry drew him back. In 1998, he and his wife Anntoinette purchased Nadi Bay Hotel, pioneering Fiji’s flashpacker resort movement. This venue quickly became popular among backpackers and tourists for its vibrant atmosphere, fine dining, and music.

Under Mr. Fifer’s management, Nadi Bay Hotel grew in success and earned several accolades, including the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards for Best Budget Accommodation. The on-site restaurant, ‘Antoinette’s,’ gained recognition, with recipes going on to be featured in award-contending cookbooks.

Throughout his career, Mr. Fifer emerged as a leading figure in Fijian tourism, serving as the founding member and president of the Fiji Islands Backpacker Association, and contributing to various tourism bodies. In recognition of his impact, he received the AON Fiji Excellence in Tourism Visionary Award in 2007.

Beyond his professional life, Mr. Fifer is cherished as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, known for his intelligence, humor, and genuine care for people. Those who have worked with him recall his wisdom and support, valuing him as an employer and a friend. Reflecting on his century of life, Mr. Fifer credits the love and support from friends and colleagues as integral to his journey.

As he approaches this remarkable birthday, he extends heartfelt wishes for a joyful holiday season to all Fijians, emphasizing the importance of community and connection that has defined his life.
