Collective action and a unified vision are essential for the long-term viability of Fiji’s tourism industry, according to Paresh Pant, the Chief Executive of Tourism Fiji. Pant made these remarks at the 3rd Fiji Tourism Convention held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, emphasizing that no single agency can ensure the sector’s success on its own.
He underscored the extensive role that tourism plays in the Fijian economy and the livelihoods of its citizens, pointing out that the responsibility for sustaining this vital sector lies with everyone involved. Pant noted that tourism supports thousands of Fijians from diverse backgrounds, impacting both rural and urban populations across various industries.
Describing tourism as more than just an economic sector, Pant labeled it an economic pillar, social catalyst, and national obligation that requires comprehensive strategies and ongoing investments. “Every decision we make today influences our future,” Pant stated, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach. He stressed that the tourism industry’s future cannot be claimed by one agency, sector, resource owner, or business alone; it is a shared responsibility.
The sector currently faces significant challenges, including labor shortages, limited hotel capacities, and delays in investment, which must be addressed to ensure future growth and sustainability. Nevertheless, Pant expressed optimism regarding the industry’s ability to overcome these hurdles through cooperative efforts. He pointed to record visitor arrivals as evidence of the sector’s resilience, noting that achieving greater heights will require continued collective action among stakeholders.
The call for unity in the tourism sector reflects a broader understanding of the interconnectedness of various players in the industry, fostering hope for a stronger, more sustainable future for Fiji’s tourism landscape.
