Fiji Swimming Treasurer Eugene Panuve has announced that the national squad for the upcoming Oceania Swimming Championships will be finalized following the Long Course National Championships at the end of April. Currently, Team Fiji comprises a training squad of 30 swimmers, but this number will be reduced to approximately 20 for the competitions.

Panuve confirmed that invitations have been sent to 16 nations from the Oceania region to participate in the championships, which Fiji will host in Suva. He noted that while larger swimming nations have shown interest, many smaller countries are still seeking financial support to secure their attendance. So far, eight nations have confirmed their participation, with more responses anticipated in the coming weeks.

The anticipation surrounding the event is growing, as Panuve expresses optimism about the turnout, estimating that between 100 and 150 swimmers may compete, depending on team sizes. He pointed out that Fiji’s relatively lower costs for travel and accommodation compared to countries like Australia could attract more participants, possibly making this year’s championships one of the most competitive to date.

Scheduled from May 8 to May 13, the Oceania Swimming Championships will feature open water races on the opening and closing days, while pool events will take place between May 9 and May 12, coinciding with the first school term holidays. The event will be broadcast live on FBC, ensuring that fans can support their teams from home.

With preparations underway and interest from various nations, the Oceania Swimming Championships in Fiji promises to be an exciting showcase of talent and sportsmanship in the region.
