Seventeen journalists and sub-editors from The Fiji Times have successfully completed a 13-week ABC Foundations of Journalism course. The participants were honored at a certificate presentation held this week, marking the completion of their training.

The editor-in-chief of The Fiji Times, Fred Wesley, praised the first group of trainees, emphasizing that the course provided a valuable opportunity for senior journalists to refresh their skills while allowing junior staff to deepen their understanding of journalism fundamentals. Wesley noted, “We have a lot of experienced and senior journalists, and this was sort of a refresher course for them. It is always encouraging to see people engage in training programs like this because it reminds us of the essential aspects of delivering quality journalism. This is the first time The Fiji Times has participated in a course with such a large group.”

Wesley extended his gratitude to those who took part in the course, appreciating their commitment to professional development. Team leader of news, Shayal Devi, highlighted that learning new skills was one of the course’s main benefits. She pointed out that topics such as mobile journalism and photojournalism are especially relevant in today’s digital landscape. Devi also found value in exploring deeper issues like gender violence, as these are crucial subjects addressed in their reporting.
