Last month marked a significant achievement for 18-year-old Sakiusa Deans Tuicakau Bainivalu, whose inspiring journey from modest beginnings to remarkable academic success has captured the attention of many. Hailing from Tabuya village in Kadavu, with maternal ties to Nabalabala, Saivou, Ra, Saki’s story embodies perseverance, dedication, and unwavering faith.
As the eldest son of Alitia Bainivalu, Fiji’s Minister for Forestry and Fisheries, Saki’s educational journey represents more than personal accomplishment; it highlights the value of hard work and commitment. Recently, he was honored with the prestigious title of Dux of Queen Victoria School for 2025 due to his extraordinary academic performance and leadership capabilities.
During his tenure at Queen Victoria School, Saki showcased exceptional talent, achieving first place in Year 13 Science and receiving accolades such as Best Mathematics Student, Best Biology Student, Best Chemistry Student, Best Physics Student, and Best Science Student. Additionally, he achieved the highest aggregate score in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination of 2024, further exemplifying what can be accomplished through determination and self-belief.
To commemorate his success, Saki’s parents hosted a heartfelt thanksgiving gathering at their home in Domain, Suva, on December 13, 2025. Surrounded by family and friends, the event celebrated his achievements while reinforcing the core values that have guided him: humility, gratitude, and perseverance.
In her speech, Ms. Bainivalu expressed immense pride in Saki’s dedication to his studies and commended his choice to uphold the values instilled in him by his family. She emphasized that these achievements are reflections of both his intelligence and his character.
As Saki embarks on the next chapter, be it further studies or career pursuits, his mother imparted valuable reminders: always acknowledge and thank God, never forget one’s roots and family sacrifices, and choose kindness in a world of possibilities.
Saki also took the opportunity to express his gratitude toward his teachers, whose support and encouragement were pivotal in his academic journey. He recounted the challenges faced while boarding at school, including hunger, yet his determination to excel never wavered. Saki demonstrated leadership before his peers by committing to maintaining cleanliness in the school, specifically targeting the proper upkeep of toilets often neglected by junior students.
