Dissatisfaction with the recent electricity tariff hike is growing among government officials, who are voicing their concerns over the impact on the Fijian population. Minister for Environment Mosese Bulitavu emphasized that the needs of the people should take precedence over institutional decisions, following a call from Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau for public consultations before implementing any further changes to tariffs.
Assisting in the dialogue, Inosi Kuridrani, the Assistant Minister for Agriculture, raised questions regarding the rationale behind the price increase, particularly given Energy Fiji Limited’s strong financial position. He also expressed confusion about the lack of communication concerning the sale of 44 percent of the company’s shares.
In response to these concerns, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has defended its decision, stating that all legal protocols were followed in the tariff adjustment process. FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta noted that the Commission operates as an independent body and indicated that not all government members disapprove of the increase.
Other ministers, like Alitia Bainivalu, have also voiced their opposition to the hike, indicating a divide within the government on this pressing matter. As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how the calls for further consultation and clarification will influence the future decisions of the FCCC and Energy Fiji Limited. This ongoing dialogue could pave the way for a more inclusive approach that considers the voices and needs of the citizens.
