The Fiji Gas Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Generator Demonstration Project was officially launched on Tuesday at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka. This ambitious initiative is a collaboration between Fiji Gas, Japanese firm Obayashi Corporation, and New Zealand’s Halcyon Power. Halcyon Power operates as a 50/50 partnership between Tūaropaki Trust in New Zealand and Obayashi Corporation, with a focus on producing green hydrogen.
The project timeline started in February last year and is expected to run until January of this year. The generator, located at Veitari in Lautoka, will utilize a blend of green hydrogen and diesel, offering a sustainable solution that reduces carbon emissions while ensuring dependable energy output. This project is notable as it manifests the utilization of green hydrogen generated from New Zealand’s geothermal energy, marking it as the first dual-fuel generator of its type in the Pacific region.
Although the project’s financial details were not disclosed, it has been confirmed that both the Ministry of Economy and the Japanese government are providing partial funding. Abas Ali, the Operations Manager at Fiji Gas, explained that the collaboration with Obayashi Corporation represents a significant international effort to bring this project to fruition. He highlighted that the dual-fuel generator is already integrated into the terminal’s power supply system, helping to reduce electricity costs at the Lautoka terminal while operational.
Obayashi Corporation’s managing executive officer, Dr. Kenichi Ando, praised the Fijian government for its support, emphasizing the global importance of hydrogen as a renewable energy source. He expressed gratitude for the partnership, marking this as a pioneering trial by Obayashi in the realm of hydrogen energy.
Dr. James Ataria, deputy chair of Tūaropaki Trust, also underscored the project’s importance as a catalyst for demonstrating green hydrogen’s potential as a versatile tool for decarbonizing Fiji’s economy and the larger Pacific region. He acknowledged the significance of preserving the natural environment while reducing the environmental impact of commercial activities.
This innovative project not only symbolizes a commitment to sustainable energy solutions but also paves the way towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels, showcasing a collaborative effort to tackle climate change. As Fiji takes strides in the green energy sector, the positive impact on both the local economy and the environment is promising.
In summary, the launch of the Fiji Gas Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Generator is a commendable step toward a greener future, demonstrating the potential for renewable energy solutions in the Pacific region. This initiative could inspire further investments in sustainable technologies and serve as an example for other nations seeking to reduce their carbon footprints.
