The Fijian Elections Office (FEO) has commenced the disposal of sensitive materials, including ballot papers, from the 2022 General Election. This destruction process, which is in accordance with legal mandates, kicked off at the FEO Warehouse in Laucala Beach and will span five weeks. An estimated 2,066 ballot boxes will be addressed during this period, whereby materials will be either recycled or incinerated.
Following the release of election results, Fiji’s electoral laws stipulate that sensitive materials must be securely disposed of within six months. However, the FEO had opted to prolong the storage of these materials due to an ongoing investigation into a significant “glitch” experienced during the 2022 elections. Recently, the Government decided not to pursue the investigation further, focusing instead on implementing systems designed to prevent similar issues in the future.
Political representatives from the Fiji Labour Party and the Social Democratic Liberal Party observed the disposal procedure, ensuring a level of transparency in the process. Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa remarked that this act not only marks the end of one electoral chapter but also serves as a critical step in preparing for the upcoming 2026 General Election—a crucial event for Fijians.
Preparation efforts for the 2026 election are already underway, with FEO officials engaging in voter registration drives, civic awareness campaigns, and encouraging electoral participation in various communities. Mataiciwa stated that these initiatives are fundamental in nurturing a fair, inclusive, and representative electoral process for the future.
While concerns about the past election glitches linger, this initiative represents a fresh start and the dedication of Fijian authorities toward ensuring a more robust electoral framework. The steps being taken emphasize a commitment to transparency and the importance of public trust within the electoral system, ultimately fostering hope for fairer elections in the years to come.
