A significant operation is currently taking place at the Dignified Crematorium in Nakasi, where authorities are preparing to destroy around $2 billion worth of methamphetamine. This massive seizure, totaling 4.15 tonnes, was confiscated from a property in Legalega, Nadi, in January of the previous year.

To ensure the operation runs smoothly and securely, a robust presence of police and military forces has been established in the area. This step aims to facilitate a transparent destruction process that adheres to a High Court order, emphasizing Fiji’s commitment to curbing drug trafficking.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mesake Waqa has confirmed that extensive consultations with multiple stakeholders—including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ministry of Environment, and international law enforcement agencies from Australia and New Zealand—have been carried out. These discussions are aimed at ensuring compliance with best practices throughout the disposal of the drugs. The destruction will take place through vaporization in a furnace, a method recognized for securely eliminating hazardous substances.

Moreover, legal representatives for the defendants involved have been present during the destruction process under strict protocols, underscoring the operation’s commitment to transparency. After the event, detailed reports about the destruction will be made publicly available, further enhancing accountability in significant law enforcement activities.

This operation marks a crucial moment in Fiji’s ongoing battle against drug-related crime and signifies a united effort among various agencies dedicated to safeguarding public safety. The collaboration between local and international law enforcement demonstrates a collective commitment to tackling the challenges posed by illicit substances.

The planned destruction represents a hopeful step forward, showcasing authorities’ decisive actions to eliminate harmful drugs from circulation, which fosters a safer environment for all citizens. Such initiatives reflect Fiji’s unwavering stance against drug trafficking and pave the way for a brighter, drug-free future for its communities.
