Fiji’s Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport has announced the ongoing implementation of its Rural Electrification Grid Extension Program, which features 73 projects currently in the construction phase. These initiatives, backed by a substantial investment of $15.9 million, aim to deliver electricity to approximately 1,636 households nationwide by the end of 2026.

Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau provided insights into the progress of these projects, which comprise part of a series of grid extension efforts that previously saw the completion of 50 projects in 2024, costing $12.7 million and benefitting 1,232 households. Between January and March 2025, an additional seven grid projects were finalized, bringing power to 27 more households for an investment of $300,000.

This grid extension program aligns with the government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and ensure fair access to essential services for rural communities. The focus remains on improving livelihoods through reliable electricity access, and the ministry is committed to connecting more communities in the future.

Similar initiatives, including the recent commitment to solar home system installations, further demonstrate the government’s dedication to increasing renewable energy utilization in Fiji. As these programs unfold, they not only aim to meet rising energy demands but also empower local communities, potentially paving the way for economic growth and a more sustainable energy future.

The continuous investments in energy infrastructure are a positive step toward uplifting the quality of life for Fijians, particularly those in underserved areas. With each project, the hope is to foster a brighter and more connected Fiji.
