The Fiji Police Force has successfully destroyed approximately 4.2 tonnes of methamphetamine at the Dignified Crematorium, following a High Court order issued in December. This operation represents a significant milestone in Fiji’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and ensure public safety.

Using a globally recognized method of vaporization in a furnace, the destruction process was meticulously carried out under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mesake Waqa. He emphasized that the operation was conducted following extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including multiple government ministries, the military, and international law enforcement agencies, ensuring best practices were adhered to while addressing any health and environmental concerns.

In a commitment to transparency and accountability, legal representatives of the respondents were allowed to observe the destruction process, in line with security protocols. ACP Waqa stated that full details regarding the operation will be made public afterward, reinforcing the integrity of the Fiji Police Force.

This collaborative effort included participation from key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, and international observers from the Australian and New Zealand police forces, among others. Such cooperation illustrates a united front against drug-related crime and highlights the authorities’ determination to create a safer community.

The operation not only reflects a proactive stance against the illicit drug trade but also symbolizes hope for a future where the influence of harmful substances is minimized. By effectively managing the disposal of these drugs, Fiji’s law enforcement agencies are taking crucial steps towards improving public health and safety. The commitment shown by the police and judicial system signals a positive trajectory for future collaborations and continued efforts to combat drug trafficking effectively.
