The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has taken decisive action by canceling the driver licenses of eight individuals linked to fatal accidents. This includes a tragic incident involving a 21-year-old truck driver, whose reckless driving on Princes Road in Tacirua resulted in the death of a 13-year-old student just last week.

According to LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa, these actions were taken following showcause proceedings under Regulation 30 of the Land Transport (Driver) Regulations 2000. The authority is also collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to address the issue of repeat traffic offenders and adjust related regulations.

Rokosawa highlighted that driving in a reckless or negligent manner is a summary offense under Section 268(a) of the Crimes Act 2009, carrying a potential penalty of up to two years in prison. The 21-year-old driver, who was operating with an expired Learner’s Permit at the time, faces a five-year suspension of his driving privileges due to the seriousness of the crash.

He emphasized that safe driving is not merely a personal responsibility; it is a social obligation that affects the entire community. Rokosawa noted that the LTA maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward reckless driving, underscoring the importance of obeying road safety rules for the protection of all road users.

The authority plans to continue its enforcement efforts against those showing disregard for traffic regulations, particularly as statistics reveal an alarming increase in accidents attributed to speeding and lack of attention. They are committed to routine inspections, speed checks, and imposing stricter penalties for traffic violations, aiming to enhance road safety for everyone.

As the festive season approaches, Rokosawa called for a change in mindset regarding road safety behaviors, expressing disappointment over irresponsible actions that lead to tragic consequences. He pointed out that, despite the current death toll of 61 as of December 11, 2024—significantly lower than the 76 fatalities reported in the same period last year—there remains a pressing need for vigilance and responsibility on the roads.

This proactive approach by the LTA demonstrates a strong commitment to improving road safety in Fiji. With ongoing collaboration with law enforcement and community education around responsible driving, there is hope for a safer future where every individual can travel with confidence, knowing that their safety and the safety of others is prioritized.

In conclusion, the initiatives aim to foster a culture of safety and mindfulness among drivers, which is essential for reducing accidents and saving lives.
