The Fiji Police Force has significantly upgraded its capabilities in combating maritime crime with the introduction of a state-of-the-art Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). This advanced underwater robotic system was formally handed over on April 27, 2025, with support from the Government of Japan and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Maritime Crime Programme.
The ROV is designed for tactical underwater operations, allowing police officers to evaluate potentially dangerous situations remotely. It can uncover hidden threats, including alterations on vessel hulls that may be utilized by transnational crime syndicates. This initiative aligns seamlessly with UNODC’s overarching goal of equipping law enforcement agencies around the world with modern technology to enhance their operational efficiency.
Ambassador Rokuichiro Michii of Japan reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s law enforcement endeavors through resource provision and ongoing training. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing maritime challenges that both Japan and Fiji share. Meanwhile, UNODC Regional Programme Coordinator for the Pacific Ocean, Ms. Madushani Nawarathna, underscored that the ROV and the accompanying training provided symbolize a long-standing commitment to bolstering maritime security in the region.
Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, voiced gratitude for Japan and UNODC’s support, highlighting that the ROV marks a strategic progression toward modernizing the capabilities of the Fiji Police Force. The recent completion of a two-day ROV training program by thirteen officers, funded by the Japanese Government, ensures that the team is ready to utilize this technology effectively.
Moreover, Ambassador Michii pledged ongoing support for the development of the Fiji Police Waterpol base at Draunibota in Lami, signaling a proactive approach to enhancing Fiji’s maritime law enforcement infrastructure.
This collaborative effort reinforces the growing partnerships in the Pacific region, reflecting optimism for a future where advanced technology and international cooperation work together to ensure safety and security against maritime crimes. The commitment from global partnerships could pave the way for more effective crime prevention strategies, fostering a safer environment for Fiji’s citizens.
