Fiji has achieved a significant milestone in reproductive health and rights with the introduction of its National Family Planning Policy 2025–2030. The policy was formally launched by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Hon. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, at a ceremony held at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
The event showcased the extensive support from both national and international stakeholders who are advocating for accessible and inclusive family planning services. Present at the launch were notable figures such as Ms. Bidisha Pillai from the UNFPA Sub-Regional Office for the Pacific, Dr. Samukeliso Dube, Executive Director of Family Planning 2030, alongside government leaders and representatives from civil society and development partners.
Minister Lalabalavu emphasized that the new policy signifies a committed national effort to provide high-quality, affordable, and inclusive family planning services to all Fijians. He pointed out specific focus areas such as addressing teenage pregnancies, expanding access to services in rural and maritime regions, and ensuring support for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations.
The policy sets out four core commitments:
1. Expanding access and inclusivity.
2. Improving service quality.
3. Prioritizing vulnerable communities.
4. Integrating family planning measures into disaster preparedness and response.
During the launch, Minister Lalabalavu called for collaborative efforts across sectors, urging partnerships involving faith-based organizations, educators, healthcare providers, and youth leaders to ensure the policy’s successful implementation.
Expressing optimism, the Minister stated, “This policy is our collective step forward in ensuring that every individual has the right, the knowledge, and the means to plan their future with dignity.”
This initiative followson from earlier efforts led by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics and the United Nations Population Fund, aiming for comprehensive national policies that prioritize health and social equity while improving quality of life for all citizens. In doing so, Fiji demonstrates a positive outlook on creating a sustainable and inclusive future, firmly committed to addressing the diverse needs of its population.
