A focused initiative to reduce methane emissions is set to intensify this month as Recycle Organics (RO) specialists arrive in Fiji to implement grassroots waste management solutions. Funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the team’s visit from May 12 to 20 aims to address the growing issue of organic waste in the Pacific region.

The first stop will be Bua Province, where four villages—Vuya, Nabouwalu, Wairiki, and Makolei—will receive home composting kits under a pilot program designed to alleviate pressure on local landfills. Dr. Sivendra Michael, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), hailed the initiative as a beneficial measure that supports agriculture, minimizes waste, and aligns with Fiji’s environmental goals.

During this visit, 200 composting kits will be distributed, alongside workshops scheduled for May 13 and 14 that will educate community members on establishing backyard composting systems to significantly reduce household waste. The initiative will also involve discussions with the MECC on integrating methane mitigation into Fiji’s climate strategies and revisiting an important emissions reduction agreement with the Water Authority of Fiji, focusing on co-digestion of organic waste to cut harmful emissions.

The RO team plans to continue their work in Lautoka City by assessing the impact of organic waste separation equipment previously introduced in 2024. Additionally, a school-focused education campaign is in the pipeline, collaborating with the University of Fiji, the Ministry of Education, and the Pacific Recycling Foundation to promote composting and waste source separation among high school students.

This broader regional engagement reflects RO’s commitment to assisting Small Island Developing States (SIDS) confront climate challenges by reducing methane emissions through sustainable waste management practices. The community-driven approach to waste management not only fosters sustainability but empowers local populations, offering a hopeful path towards a cleaner, healthier environment in Fiji and beyond.

By involving various stakeholders and focusing on youth education, the efforts spearheaded by RO and its partners in Fiji signal a promising advancement toward a more sustainable future for the region, creating valuable opportunities for environmental stewardship.
