Fiji swimmers are intensifying their preparations for selection to the Pacific Mini Games, with the latest mini meet occurring at the Damodar City National Aquatic Centre in Suva. This third mini meet attracted participation from seven clubs nationwide, where athletes aged 14 and over are striving to achieve qualifying times for final trials set for April 11.

Esther Malani, the head coach of Orca Swimming Club, emphasized the importance of this competition in helping swimmers reach their goals. “Swimmers are eager to achieve the qualifying times for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau,” Malani stated. She noted that several athletes have already met the time requirements, including Orca’s Imelda Smith, who has qualified in two events.

The selection process will conclude with a team comprising 16 swimmers, divided evenly between eight males and eight females, including under-18 and over-18 categories. Clubs that showcased their talents at the mini meet included Great White Sharks, Barracuda, Mako, and Seals from Nadi, alongside entrants from Suva’s Tritons, Orca, and Dolphin Club.

Despite the challenges posed by unpredictable weather, Malani remained optimistic, stating, “The sun drains their energy, but the rain helps cool them down. It’s all part of the challenge.”

As swimmers gear up for the crucial trials set to take place next month, their unwavering dedication highlights a collective spirit of commitment within Fiji’s swimming community. The Pacific Mini Games, scheduled for June 29 to July 9 in Palau, represents not only a chance for individual achievement but also a proud opportunity for Fiji to enhance its stature in sports regionally.

The enthusiasm shown by athletes in these competitions reflects a promising future for Fiji swimming, showcasing their determination to perform well on an international stage.
