Fiji Swimming has launched a GoFundMe page to support its athletes in participating at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau next month. With a target of raising $48,000, each of the 16 swimmers faces a levy of $3,000 to cover their expenses. Notable athletes among the team include gold medallists from the 2023 Pacific Games, Kelera Mudunasoko and Hansel McCaig.

The Aqua Challenge, which started on May 10 and runs until June 10, encourages swimmers to collectively cover a distance of at least 640 kilometers, with each swimmer aiming for a minimum of 40 kilometers. Team manageress Cheyenne Rova highlighted the initiative as a way to bolster not only athlete preparedness but also water safety and mental well-being within the community. The challenge invites everyone to participate, whether in pools, oceans, or lakes, and aims to extend its goal to reach over 1,000 kilometers.

In a commendable effort to give back, Fiji Swimming plans to distribute 10% of the funds raised to local water safety initiatives. The swimmers are being trained under coaches Willie Elaisa and Sharon Smith, and swimming is among the 12 sports that Team Fiji will compete in at the Mini Games.

This fundraising initiative reflects broader efforts seen in other sports categories in Fiji, as various federations face similar financial challenges to support their athletes’ participation due to the levies involved. The community’s involvement and support for these athletes not only highlight the spirit of unity within Fiji’s sports community but also offer a hopeful perspective on the successes that lie ahead as they prepare to represent their nation on an international stage.

The anticipation surrounding the athletes’ potential performances embodies a sense of national pride, underlining the importance of community support in overcoming financial hurdles and enhancing Fiji’s visibility in regional sports. There’s much to look forward to as the Pacific Mini Games approach, with athletes ready to showcase their dedication and hard work.
