Pacific Games gold medalist Hansel McCaig has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new national record in the men’s 100 meters medley. At the recent World Aquatics Swimming Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, he clocked an impressive time of 57.31 seconds.

McCaig was part of a trio of Fijian swimmers competing at the World Championships, alongside Marseleima Moss and David Young, who is based in the United States. Notably, Young also made headlines by establishing a national record in the men’s 50m butterfly during the same event.

In another significant development, Fiji Swimming president Lucy Erasito and board member Eugene Panuve unveiled their strategic plan to World Aquatics for the upcoming four years. This initiative followed a nine-month collaboration with the International Federation as part of a mentorship program aimed at aligning Fiji Swimming with global standards.

As part of the strategic planning process, a workshop was conducted with stakeholders in Fiji to refine the organization’s vision, mission, and values. Fiji Swimming successfully completed their proposed deliverables to World Aquatics, facing challenges that provided valuable insights into effective planning and collaboration. The program highlighted common challenges encountered by national federations of various sizes, promoting a spirit of unity and shared experiences.

Fiji Swimming expressed gratitude to past and present board members for their efforts in laying the foundation and guiding the vision for the future of swimming in Fiji. The organization reiterated its commitment to prioritizing athletes’ needs above all else.

This recent progress in Fiji’s swimming scene reflects the nation’s dedication to nurturing talent and fostering an environment conducive to success. With records being broken and strategic plans underway, the future looks bright for Fijian swimming as these developments may lead to more athletes excelling on the world stage.
