The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced a suspension of the new electricity tariff authorization set to take effect on January 1, 2026. This decision follows recent mixed feedback from the public regarding the proposed rates, which were initially revealed on December 19 after the FCCC’s assessment of the tariff proposal submitted by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL).

To address these concerns, the FCCC will conduct a 21-day consultation period, inviting the public to voice their opinions on the tariff structure and its anticipated impacts. The Commission emphasized the importance of public participation in this process, urging all Fijians to submit their perspectives. “This measure taken by the FCCC is an exception, and all Fijians are urged to make submissions,” the Commission stated.

Alongside an online survey, the FCCC will facilitate written submissions and actively reach out to various stakeholders, including consumer groups, businesses, government offices, political parties, social organizations, and youth representatives.

The FCCC reiterated its commitment to independence, stating that its regulatory decisions are driven solely by evidence and the long-term interests of both consumers and the Fijian economy. Earlier this month, FCCC chief executive Senikavika Jiuta highlighted that although the EFL’s previous tariff proposal from August 2023 was rejected, a thorough review is essential to ensure that electricity prices stay fair and affordable, while also paving the way for needed investments.

The revised tariffs are projected to support approximately $1.57 billion in investments over the next four years, facilitating the expansion of renewable energy generation, improving transmission infrastructure, and upgrading the electricity network throughout the country. This focus on sustainable energy infrastructure not only aims to enhance the reliability of power supply but also signifies a commitment to transitioning to renewable energy for Fiji’s long-term energy security. These efforts reflect a positive step towards a more sustainable future for all Fijians.
