The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has decided to suspend the upcoming electricity tariff set to take effect on January 1, and has opened a 21-day consultation period for public input. This initiative invites diverse stakeholders, including consumers, households, businesses, government departments, political parties, social groups, and youth representatives, to actively participate in discussions regarding the electricity rates.

Citizens and traders are encouraged to share their perspectives via an online survey or in writing. In support of transparency, the FCCC plans to make available a non-confidential version of the Electricity Fiji Limited (EFL) submission from May 2025 on its website, along with information about the Electricity Tariff Methodology.

The Commission has clarified that this additional consultation serves as a valuable opportunity for the public to voice their opinions, emphasizing that their operations are independent and driven by evidence-based regulatory decisions aimed at safeguarding the long-term interests of consumers and the economy of Fiji.

Earlier, the FCCC had announced new electricity tariff rates following a comprehensive review of EFL’s proposal, ensuring that all determinations were in compliance with statutory requirements and established procedures. However, public feedback on the announced rates was mixed, prompting the Commission to seek further input during this consultation period, which will ultimately help in shaping final decisions. This engagement reflects a commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in the energy sector while prioritizing the voices of Fijians.
