The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations in Fiji has announced a suspension of all Ferris wheel operations throughout the country until further notice. This decision follows an incident involving a 12-seater Ferris wheel during the Wairiki Sevens tournament in Taveuni, which has prompted a thorough investigation.

The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) of the Employment Ministry is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. According to the Ministry, the Ferris wheels were inspected by the NOHSS Inspectorate on December 7 and December 9, 2024, and received certification to operate on December 9, 2024, after passing relevant examinations and tests.

In light of the incident, NOHSS has issued a prohibition notice that halts all Ferris wheel operations. The Ministry is committed to carrying out a comprehensive investigation based on the evidence collected and will release updates once the investigation is complete.

The decision to implement a ban was made following extensive discussions among the senior staff in the Ministry. Their priority is ensuring the safety of all amusement ride users.

While this situation is undoubtedly unfortunate, it serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols and thorough inspections in amusement rides. The Ministry’s commitment to investigating the matter diligently reflects its responsibility toward public welfare. Once the investigation concludes and safety measures are reviewed, there is hope for a safer and more secure enjoyment of amusement rides in the future.

This proactive approach by the Ministry may ultimately enhance public trust in amusement operations and ensure a safer environment for all.
