Students at the Fiji National University (FNU) actively encouraged their peers to reject the use of drugs and promote healthier lifestyles during the recent Mini Health Expo at the Tamavua Campus in Suva. This event, organized by the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, featured eight booths dedicated to raising awareness on critical health issues, including substance abuse, cardiovascular health, and various forms of cancer.

Third-year Dietetics and Nutrition student Keona Saukuru emphasized that the expo’s goal was to educate fellow students about pressing health concerns in Fiji. “We want to spread awareness about health issues in the country,” said Ms. Saukuru, who led her group in focusing on drug abuse prevention. They communicated a straightforward message — “say no to drugs.” She cautioned attendees, stating, “If you’re thinking about it, it’s not going to solve your problem. It’s probably going to make it worse for you. Drugs are not the answer.”

The expo exceeded expectations in terms of attendance, with over 35 students from the Dietetics, Nutrition, and Health Promotion programs displaying educational materials and providing informative consultations to visitors. The students created their booths with inspiration from past events and adapted ideas sourced online.

This initiative aligns with FNU’s broader commitment to creating a drug-free learning environment, particularly in light of concerning statistics revealing that approximately 1.7% of students in Fiji, or over 3,500 individuals, were reported to have engaged in some form of drug use. The proactive efforts from FNU, which include ongoing campaigns and support programs aimed at reducing substance abuse, demonstrate a collective commitment to combating this issue.

While the statistics regarding drug use among youths are alarming, events like the Mini Health Expo present an opportunity for positive change. By fostering awareness and encouraging open discussions about health issues, the university is laying the groundwork for a healthier future for Fiji’s youth.

As the community rallies together to tackle these health challenges, hope lies in the potential for individuals to draw strength from these initiatives and choose paths of wellness and resilience.
