Fiji has officially commissioned the RFNS Timo, a modern Guardian-class patrol boat, during a ceremony held at the Naval Base in Walu Bay. This vessel, a generous donation from the Australian government, significantly boosts the Fiji Navy’s capacity to protect the nation’s maritime borders.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Prof. Prasad, emphasized the patrol boat’s critical role, particularly in response to rising instances of drug trafficking via maritime channels. He stated, “Her presence will enhance our readiness, strengthen our partnerships with allies, and promote peace and stability in our region.” This highlights the importance of bolstering maritime security as part of broader efforts to combat illicit activities.

The RFNS Timo replaces the retired RFNS Puamau, thus filling a crucial operational void for Fiji’s naval forces. Built by Austal, the vessel was initially earmarked for Timor-Leste but was renamed in tribute to Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II. Captain Timoci Natuva, Commander of the Fiji Navy, expressed appreciation to Australia for this significant addition, underscoring its importance in securing Fiji’s maritime boundaries.

With a crew of 22 personnel drawn from various branches of the navy—including electricians and marine engineers—the RFNS Timo is equipped to maintain operational excellence. It will work in conjunction with Fiji’s Maritime Essential Services Centre and the C-27 Spartan Aircraft, enhancing the country’s disaster preparedness and coastal rescue operations.

This latest addition to Fiji’s naval fleet underscores not only improved national security but also the enduring partnership between Fiji and Australia, demonstrating a shared commitment to regional stability. The integration of the RFNS Timo marks a significant advancement in Fiji’s defensive capabilities, offering hope for a secure maritime future and fostering regional cooperation in tackling common security challenges.
