Fiji has welcomed its latest Guardian-class patrol boat, the RFNS Timo, a generous gift from Australia that reinforces the strong relationship between the two countries. This significant handover was celebrated in Perth, with Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, expressing heartfelt thanks for the support from Australia alongside Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy RFMF Commander Humphrey Tawake.

In his remarks, Tikoduadua noted that the RFNS Timo enhances Fiji’s maritime capabilities, allowing the nation to better protect its waters, conserve natural resources, and contribute to regional stability. This vessel replaces the RFNS Puamau, which was recently decommissioned, and addresses a crucial need within Fiji’s maritime operations.

The RFNS Timo was built by Austal and was initially intended for Timor-Leste, but following some delays, it was renamed in honor of Able Seaman Timo Puamau—a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II. Notably, the RFNS Timo joins RFNS Savenaca (401), another Guardian-class vessel also commemorating a Fijian World War II hero. Together, they form an integral part of a program designed to bolster Fiji’s maritime security and border protection capabilities while safeguarding the country’s natural resources.

This latest addition marks a significant step in Australia’s Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme, which recently celebrated the handover of its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with a total of 24 vessels slated for delivery.

Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that this gesture is a testament to the profound partnership and mutual dedication shared by Fiji and Australia. It serves as a hopeful reminder of the collaborative efforts between nations to foster peace and security in the Pacific region.

In summary, the arrival of RFNS Timo is not just a pivotal enhancement to Fiji’s maritime operations but also a symbol of the enduring friendship and cooperation between Fiji and Australia, paving the way for a more secure future in the region.
