Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken decisive action by terminating Jese Saukuru from his position as Minister for Youth and Sports, effective immediately. This decision comes in response to serious allegations of abuse of office concerning the Fiji Sports Council, marking a significant step toward addressing governance issues in sports administration.
Rabuka articulated that the dismissal aims to facilitate an independent investigation by the Fiji Police Force, ensuring that the inquiry is carried out without any interference. This action underscores the government’s commitment to upholding principles of transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
While the Prime Minister assumes temporary responsibility for the Youth and Sports portfolio, Assistant Minister Aliki Bia will continue to oversee the ministry’s daily operations, ensuring continuity in governance.
In tandem with Saukuru’s dismissal, Rabuka has instructed the suspension of Fiji Sports Council CEO Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure. This suspension aims to enable a thorough investigation into possible financial mismanagement within the council, signaling a strong stance against any misconduct.
This proactive approach by Prime Minister Rabuka reflects an intention to restore public confidence in the governance of sports and youth affairs in Fiji. By taking immediate and transparent measures to address these allegations, the government is demonstrating a dedication to integrity and accountability within its ranks.
