The Fiji Sports Council reaffirmed its dedication to nurturing athletes and enhancing international representation by presenting a $9,000 donation to Athletics Fiji. The funds aim to support three outstanding athletes: Heleina Young, who competes in the 200m, 400m, and relay events; Miliakere Nikolau, specializing in javelin throw; and Loata Lewageena, a discus thrower. This financial support is critical as these athletes prepare for the upcoming 12th Pacific Mini Games in Palau, scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 9.

The donation was officially handed over by Acting FSC Chief Executive Gilbert Vakalalabure to Athletics Fiji President Joji Liga at the HFC Bank Stadium. Vakalalabure expressed pride in the Council’s efforts to empower local athletes and help them pursue regional success. Liga acknowledged the timely assistance, noting that it significantly alleviates the financial pressures on the athletes and their families.

These three athletes are part of a broader Team Fiji Athletics squad consisting of 25 members, supported by eight officials, who are gearing up for the Mini Games. The support from the FSC not only highlights its commitment to athlete development but resonates with similar efforts seen across various sports federations in Fiji.

In recent months, other organizations, like the Fiji Islands Baseball and Softball Association, have also received valuable donations to aid their preparations, reflecting a unified commitment to promoting sports and athlete welfare throughout the nation. As Team Fiji looks ahead to the Pacific Mini Games, these collaborative efforts and investments signal a hopeful outlook for the athletes and Fiji’s representation on the international stage.

This positive momentum underscores the importance of community involvement and support in fostering athletic talent, paving the way for future successes in Fiji’s sports landscape.
