Fiji will honor its sporting talents at the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards, taking place on March 22 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, under the theme “Celebrating Sporting Excellence.” This annual event recognizes the outstanding achievements of athletes, coaches, and officials, aiming to inspire future successes in Fiji’s sporting landscape.
Organized with sponsorship from FIJI Water, the Oceania National Olympic Committee, and Paradise Beverages, the awards night will feature nominees across 11 categories, including Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, Young Athlete of the Year, and Team of the Year. Notable nominations include amateur boxer Merewalesi Kolitapa, who is vying for recognition in the Young Female Athlete category, representing AFL Fiji and the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association.
This year, an impressive record of 112 nominees has been registered from 22 national sporting organizations, reflecting a remarkable increase from the previous year’s 98 nominees. This surge highlights the dedication within Fiji’s sporting community, fostering unity among participants and supporters. Peter Mazey, CEO of the Fiji Sports Commission, emphasizes the importance of recognizing not only the athletes but also the essential roles played by volunteers, officials, and sports supporters.
The awards serve as a platform for celebrating collective achievements and generating enthusiasm as Fiji continues to build on its sporting legacy, particularly as athletes gear up for major international events such as the Paris Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in 2024.
The growing recognition at events like the Fiji Sports Awards not only honors individual talents but also instills a sense of pride and hope for the future of sports in Fiji, nurturing a vibrant environment where future generations are inspired to excel.
