The Fiji Police Force is currently investigating a concerning social media post by a popular local singer who has sparked public criticism for announcing a $1000 cash giveaway. The giveaway, which requires participants to send $2 via M-Paisa to a specified mobile number, has raised alarms about potential deceptive practices associated with this promotion.

This scrutiny comes as the police have recently intensified their efforts against fraud, particularly concerning transactions conducted through the M-Paisa mobile payment system. In related incidents, the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce has apprehended multiple individuals involved in scams utilizing similar tactics, such as the fraudulent renting of cars through misleading social media advertisements.

Corporal Wame Bautolu, a spokesperson for the police, noted that the current situation surrounding the singer’s post has been referred to the Cybercrime Unit, emphasizing the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding the public from potential scams.

The rise in fraudulent activities emphasizes the necessity for vigilance among the community when engaging in online transactions. With the increasing prevalence of such scams, it is critical for users to verify the legitimacy of offers before participating or making any payments.

This incident serves as a critical reminder for both the public and influencers about their responsibility in promoting safe practices online. While the actions of the singer may have unintentionally sparked controversy, it is hopeful that this situation will raise awareness and encourage individuals to approach online offers with caution, ultimately fostering a more secure digital environment.
