Shop owners in Fiji’s northern cities of Savusavu and Labasa are proactively preparing for potential flooding as Tropical Cyclone Rae approaches the region. In Labasa, many shopkeepers have begun relocating items that could be damaged by flooding and have elevated their stock to reduce risk. Paul Jaduram, chair of the Labasa Town Council, confirmed that local businesses are taking necessary precautions and working closely with authorities to monitor the developing situation.

Currently, although the Labasa River has not reached a critical level, the Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a flash flood warning for all small streams and low-lying areas on Vanua Levu, highlighting concerns about potential flooding due to inadequate drainage systems and the forecasted heavy rains. A similar alert is also in effect for Viti Levu.

Rain began in the northern regions early in the morning and, while not continuous, has raised alarms for possible flooding threats. Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety by avoiding flood-prone areas, as conditions could lead to dangerous accumulations of water and disruptions.

This proactive attitude among local shop owners and the community illustrates a spirit of resilience and preparedness, showcasing how communities can unite and support each other during adverse weather events. Continuous updates from weather agencies will be crucial in navigating the challenges posed by Cyclone Rae, with hopes that coordinated efforts will help mitigate the impacts of the storm.

In summary, as the community braces for potentially severe weather, the collective action to prepare for flooding serves as a reminder of the strength and solidarity within the community in facing natural adversities.
