Fiji concluded its participation in the HSBC Cape Town 7s tournament by securing third place, triumphing over Spain with a decisive score of 47-10 in the bronze medal match. Despite a narrow loss to France, with a score of 19-17, in the semifinals, Fiji showcased their prowess in the playoff.
Coached by Osea Kolinisau, Fiji demonstrated remarkable skill on the field, scoring seven tries during the match against Spain. The team utilized every attacking opportunity and effectively capitalized on Spain’s unforced errors. Players Joji Nasova, Filipe Sauturaga, Jeremaia Matana, George Bose, Terio Veilawa, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, and Vuiviwa Naduvalo each contributed a try, reflecting the depth and talent within the squad. Additionally, Nasova and Teba successfully converted one try each, while Sauturaga and Veilawa both added two conversions to their tallies.
Spain managed to secure only two tries in the first half, thanks to Jeremy Trevithick, but struggled to keep pace with Fiji’s offensive onslaught.
This performance underscores Fiji’s strong showing in the tournament despite the earlier setback, highlighting the team’s resilience and ability to regroup and compete effectively. With such talent on display, the future looks bright for Fiji’s rugby sevens program, leaving fans hopeful and excited for future competitions.
