The Fiji Airways men’s sevens rugby team is poised to elevate their performance in the upcoming HSBC SVNS series in Singapore, focusing on fine-tuning their distinctive playing style. Coach Kolinisau emphasized the importance of harnessing their renowned flair and clinical finishing to gain an advantage in the competition.
“Sharpening up is crucial, especially in our strengths—our flair. This is evident in our daily training sessions, where we focus heavily on passing and offloading skills,” he explained. Kolinisau stressed that the team aims to avoid becoming one-dimensional, instead creating cohesive plays that incorporate teamwork and strategic runs.
Fiji’s trademark attacking flair has historically set them apart on the rugby field, but with opponents improving their tactics, Kolinisau believes that being precise in all aspects of their game is vital for maintaining their edge. “We’re not going to neglect the Fijian flair; it distinguishes us from other teams. However, we must focus on discipline and capitalize on critical opportunities,” he stated.
Former Fiji Sevens star Sireli Bobo has called upon the players to step up their game in light of the upcoming matches. He commended Kolinisau’s leadership and highlighted the responsibility now resting on the players to implement their coach’s strategies effectively.
“Defensive skills will be paramount as we advance into the competition. I know Oscar has worked on this aspect, but now it’s up to the players to execute these plans in practice,” Bobo noted, reinforcing that while Kolinisau will guide them from the sidelines, the players need to take charge on the field.
As the Singapore Sevens approaches, the Fiji men’s team will face formidable opponents including South Africa, Great Britain, and Spain, while the Fijiana side will contend with Australia, Japan, and the USA in their respective pool play. The tournament is set to commence next Saturday, and both teams are eager to showcase their skills.
