Fiji has secured places in both the men’s and women’s semi-finals at the New York Sevens after commanding performances in their final pool matches on Saturday. The Fiji Airways Men’s 7s produced a dominant 43–12 victory over Spain to clinch progression, while the Fijiana 7s sealed their semi-final berth with a 36–12 win over Great Britain.
The men’s campaign in New York has been a rollercoaster. After a 31–12 opening loss to Argentina, the side recovered with a close 24–19 win over Great Britain before running away with the result against Spain in their final pool outing this morning. The emphatic victory underlined the squad’s attacking potency and ensured they finish pool play in the top positions required to advance to the last four.
The Fijiana also showed resilience across their three pool matches. They opened with a narrow 22–17 victory over France, were then beaten 31–10 by New Zealand, and responded emphatically in their final pool game by accounting for Great Britain 36–12. That strong finish put the women through to the semis and will give the coaching staff confidence heading into the knockout phase.
Fiji’s men will meet Australia in the semi-final at 4:28pm, while the Fijiana are scheduled to take the field in their semi-final at 5:34pm. Both matches will be shown live on Fiji Broadcasting Corporation’s FBC Sports channel, providing supporters in Suva and across Fiji the chance to follow the sides as they bid to reach the finals in New York.
The double qualification is an important marker for Fiji’s sevens programmes midway through the World Rugby Sevens Series stop, demonstrating depth and the ability to rebound from setbacks. The men’s narrow win over Great Britain and the Fijiana’s response after the New Zealand loss both reflect a capacity to adapt under pressure — a trait that will be tested further against high-quality opposition in the semis.
With semi-final matchups now set and broadcast arrangements confirmed, attention will turn to team selections, match plans and recovery ahead of the knockout games. A strong showing in these fixtures would keep Fiji’s ambitions for tournament silverware alive and provide momentum as the series progresses.
