Fijian national rugby team coach Viliame Satala is committed to enhancing the capabilities of his players by involving the national shadow side in more local tournaments following their impressive performance at the recent Rooster Chicken Grassroots Sevens Tournament. Satala emphasized the importance of these local competitions, stating that they provide essential exposure for young players to refine their skills.

The tournament showcased the growth of the team, especially after a challenging match against Dominion. Satala reflected on the progression observed during the competition, noting that the players began to establish their team dynamics and confidence, particularly evidenced during their match against Army. He highlighted that the team focused on critical aspects of their game, such as securing kick-offs, improving communication, and enhancing defensive structures, resulting in significant improvements.

A standout player during the tournament, Apimeliki Nasalo, was named player of the tournament for his impactful performances, which included dominating collisions, disrupting breakdowns, and showcasing his ability to influence the game’s outcomes. Satala also praised the efforts of several emerging players, including Isaia Rugu, Esala, Douglas Daveta, and playmaker Etuate, who made notable contributions throughout the event.

Despite the tournament victory, Satala remains aware that there is still much work to be done in preparing his young players for international competition. He highlighted that effective communication is vital for the team’s success in both defense and attack, particularly in high-pressure situations towards the end of games. While acknowledging that many of his players tend to be naturally reserved, he expressed satisfaction with the increased vocal presence during the tournament, which is crucial for their development.

Looking ahead, Satala is optimistic that with continued participation in local tournaments, these talented players will gain the confidence and experience needed to step onto the international stage, contributing positively to Fiji’s rugby future.
