Fiji’s shipbuilding industry is poised for a significant transformation as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently welcomed a feasibility study report aimed at revitalizing the sector. Conducted by Arup Australia in partnership with the Australian High Commission and the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP), this study is a pivotal step toward Fiji’s ambition of becoming a maritime hub in the Pacific.

During the report presentation, Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the Coalition Government’s commitment to enhancing Fiji’s shipbuilding capabilities. The project is set to roll out in phases at a designated shipbuilding site, which will be overseen by Oceania Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte Limited, a government-owned company established for this initiative.

This feasibility study is part of a broader Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding Port Infrastructure and Services that Fiji and Australia signed last year. This partnership is essential not only for building technical capacity but also for creating jobs and developing a skilled maritime workforce in Fiji. Rabuka expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from the Australian Government and AIFFP, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation in promoting Fiji’s economic and industrial growth.

The initiative aims to enhance Fiji’s competitive edge in the global maritime sector, echoing previous discussions on the country’s historical importance and potential in shipbuilding. It seeks to generate employment opportunities and train a new generation of skilled workers, contributing positively to economic growth in the region.

The revitalization of Fiji’s shipbuilding industry arrives at a promising juncture, indicating potential for significant transformation and sustainable growth within the maritime sector. This development not only enhances Fiji’s economic prospects but also reinforces its regional significance. There is widespread optimism that this collaboration will not only restore Fiji’s stature in shipbuilding but also ensure resilience and progress in the coming years.
