Fiji has officially reaffirmed its role as the host for the 76th Session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Committee Meeting (RCM) set to take place in October 2025. This announcement came from the Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Penioni Ravunawa, and Acting Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Luisa Cikamatana during a meeting with Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, the WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, held in Geneva.
The meeting was scheduled on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly at the United Nations headquarters, where Fiji’s commitment to hosting the event was well received. Dr. Piukala expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming gathering, highlighting that member states are already inquiring about logistics, including the dress code and accommodation options in Nadi.
This significant event is expected to extend beyond health discussions, providing Fiji with a platform to highlight its rich cultural heritage and hospitality to the visiting delegates. Notably, the RCM serves as the primary decision-making body for the WHO in the Western Pacific, composed of 38 member states and areas. This will be a historic occasion as it marks the first time an independent Pacific Island nation will host such a meeting.
The forthcoming RCM not only illustrates Fiji’s enhanced role in global health governance but also reflects the growing anticipation among member countries involved in the region’s health policies. The event promises to foster collaboration and strengthen ties among states, paving the way for impactful health initiatives and policies. It’s a moment of pride for Fiji, affirming its commitment to regional and international health improvement efforts.
As Fiji prepares for this pivotal gathering, it signifies its leadership in fostering cooperation on crucial health issues in the Pacific, creating a hopeful outlook for collaborative health advancements in the region.
