Google’s new ICT facility at Natadola will serve as a critical cable landing station, housing essential infrastructure such as data transmission servers and power equipment. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced the groundbreaking of this facility on Saturday, highlighting its potential to establish Fiji as a key hub for digital connectivity in the Pacific region.

The facility will host the second cable landing station on Viti Levu, enhancing Fiji’s internet connectivity and resilience with two landing stations strategically located in the Central Division and the West. This cutting-edge ICT hub will support Google’s transnational subsea telecommunication cables across the Pacific, linking Fiji not only to the United States, but also to Australia, Japan, and Chile—marking a first in cable routing for the Pacific.

Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that with this new infrastructure, Fiji will play a vital role in the global internet ecosystem, connecting Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. He underscored the importance of bolstering international data flows, fostering innovation, and ensuring that Pacific communities can actively engage in the global digital economy.

“This project reflects our vision of uniting and empowering the Fijian people,” Rabuka stated, reiterating the government’s commitment to attracting world-class investments that support sustainable growth.

Representatives from Google, including Vice President of Global Network Infrastructure Brian Quigley, attended the event, reaffirming Google’s dedication to enhancing global connectivity. Quigley noted that this facility, along with four new fiber optic connections, is part of the Pacific Connect initiative that aims to close the digital gap.

Google’s collaboration with entities like the Fiji National Provident Fund and Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (FINTEL) further strengthens this project, paving the way for improved connectivity and opportunities in the region.

This development not only sets a positive trajectory for technological advancement in Fiji but also promises to eliminate disparities in digital access, fostering inclusive growth for all Fijians in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

In summary, the establishment of Google’s ICT facility marks a significant milestone for Fiji, positioning the nation as an integral part of the global digital framework and empowering its citizens to thrive in the technology-driven world.
