Google is set to construct a new cable landing station at its ICT facility in Natadola, Fiji, which will serve as a critical component of the Pacific’s digital infrastructure. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made this announcement during the groundbreaking ceremony held on Saturday. He emphasized that this facility will enhance Fiji’s role as a central hub for digital connectivity in the Pacific region.
The new ICT facility will be home to essential infrastructure, including data transmission servers, racks, and power generators, aimed at supporting the international fiber optic cables that Google plans to lay in Fiji. This development marks the establishment of the second cable landing station on Viti Levu, complementing an existing station in the Central Division. Together, these facilities will bolster Fiji’s internet connectivity and resilience.
According to Prime Minister Rabuka, the state-of-the-art ICT facility is set to provide a vital link through Google’s transnational subsea telecommunication cables connecting Fiji to the United States, Australia, Japan, and notably, Chile, creating the first such cable route for Fiji and the Pacific.
