The Mineral Resources Department is actively seeking expressions of interest from qualified consultants to conduct an Environmental Impact and Damage Assessment (EIDA) concerning the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater that is affecting the Sabeto River catchment in Nadi.
As announced in a recent notice, the selected consultant will undertake a thorough and independent scientific assessment aimed at determining the environmental and social ramifications stemming from wastewater pollution in the river. This assessment will require establishing baseline conditions related to water quality, biodiversity, and human utilization of the river system, as well as evaluating the physical, chemical, and biological impacts of pollution.
Key components of the work will involve analyzing various water parameters, which include measuring levels of heavy metals, turbidity, and water temperature, alongside assessing the effects on aquatic life and the surrounding ecosystems. Furthermore, the impacts on local communities that depend on the river for their livelihoods—including fishing and agriculture—will also be investigated, paying special attention to food security and household income.
The consultant will also be responsible for quantifying any environmental and social losses and applying established valuation and compensation methodologies to guide the valuation process. Recommendations for rehabilitation and restoration measures will be expected as part of the assessment, alongside developing a framework for river rehabilitation, proposing mitigation strategies, and suggesting transparent monitoring and performance indicators to facilitate long-term recovery efforts.
The assessment will align with the Environment Management Act 2005 and aims to provide scientifically robust findings that will inform governmental decisions, enforcement actions, and remediation planning. The Mineral Resources Department encourages interested consultants with appropriate technical expertise and experience in environmental assessments to submit their applications as per the Department’s guidelines.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges and underscores a commitment to restoring the health of vital ecosystems, ultimately benefiting both the environment and local communities.
