The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved substantial funding to bolster Fiji’s water security and ocean health through a groundbreaking project named the “Healthy Oceans and Water Security Improvement Project.” With a $280 million concessional loan and an additional $22 million grant, this initiative aims to significantly transform Fiji’s water and environmental infrastructure, specifically targeting the greater Suva area.

The project, managed by the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF), includes pivotal upgrades to infrastructure and expands the capacity of the Kinoya wastewater treatment plant. This modernization will double its capacity, employing advanced technologies to decrease energy consumption and long-term maintenance expenses. Aaron Batten, Regional Director of ADB’s Pacific Subregional Office, emphasized these upgrades’ potential to enhance ocean health and water quality, particularly around Laucala Bay, which has suffered from increased pollution due to Suva’s rapid urban growth and limited wastewater management.

Beyond improving wastewater treatment, the initiative addresses Suva’s aging pipe network to drastically reduce water losses, which are predominantly from physical leaks. If successful, it promises to save 10.5 million cubic meters of water annually and cut carbon emissions by over 1,400 metric tons each year.

Additionally, the project will establish a regional training hub in Lautoka to enhance skills in water management, supported by a $10 million grant from ADB’s Asian Development Fund. This hub aims to support the creation of a skilled workforce equipped to operate and maintain advanced water and wastewater facilities across Fiji and the Pacific.

These efforts are part of Fiji’s broader strategy to tackle environmental sustainability challenges and build infrastructure resilience amid climate change impacts. The comprehensive plan not only seeks to improve current water infrastructure but also to set a foundation for long-term environmental and economic sustainability. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, public health, and sustainable development, positioning Fiji as a regional leader in tackling environmental and infrastructural challenges through innovative solutions.
