The Fijian Cabinet has recently approved a significant Memorandum of Understanding with the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare, facilitating a grant valued at approximately KRW 10 billion, or around USD $16.1 million. This funding will be instrumental in implementing key health strategies in Fiji, particularly focusing on the sub-divisional execution of the National Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Strategy and the National Digital Health Strategy, with an emphasis on diabetes prevention and management.

Government officials highlighted that this initiative is designed to enhance local healthcare systems and address challenges posed by non-communicable diseases, which remain a significant health concern in Fiji. The financial support from the Korea Foundation is expected to bolster capacity among community health workers, reinforce community-based health systems, and establish vital referral and tele-consultation services aimed at improving healthcare access, especially in underserved regions.

Additionally, the project will integrate advanced smart and digital health solutions to streamline patient management and facilitate the effective delivery of healthcare services nationwide. This initiative is in line with Fiji’s long-term health objectives, aiming to enhance early detection, treatment, and management of NCDs at the community level.

The project is slated to continue until December 31, 2030, marking a promising step forward in Fiji’s efforts to combat non-communicable diseases and improve overall health outcomes for its population.
