Fiji’s rugby scene is buzzing with excitement as Sale Sorovaki, who currently plays in Japan, has been appointed captain of the Vodafone national rugby team for their upcoming Test against Scotland in Suva. The 28-year-old from Lawaki, Nakasaleka expressed his surprise and enthusiasm upon receiving the captaincy, stating, “I don’t know what to say, I am lost for words… To be named captain was unexpected but nonetheless I am thrilled. I’ll give it my best shot.”

Sorovaki leads a squad that features four new caps, including his assistant Meli Tamanitoakula and Auckland Blues’ Apisai Naevo. Other rookies include reserves Meli Nakauta, Sikeli Nasau, and Samu Saumaisue, marking a new chapter for the team as they blend experience with youthful talent. Interestingly, established players such as Nicky Little, Samisoni Rabaka, and Alifereti Mocelutu have secured starting positions, edging out other notable players like Waisale Serevi and Jacob Rauluni.

Head coach Brad Johnstone commented on the tough selection process, highlighting the competitive nature of the trials. “For the first time since I’ve been involved with Fiji, we’ve had two decent sides and more than two players in each position vying for a Test spot,” he remarked. This competitive spirit is vital as the team prepares for World Cup qualifying rounds later in the year.

Johnstone’s dual approach aims to balance seasoned experience with the infusion of new talent, nurturing both current and future players. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong squad as they gear up for the challenges ahead, including the upcoming match against France.

The Fijian rugby scene is thriving, with anticipation building as the team prepares to showcase their skills on the international stage. This mix of youthful exuberance and seasoned veterans not only bodes well for the upcoming match but also signifies a hopeful future for Fijan rugby, encouraging a new generation of players to aspire to greatness.
